What Is IMAT?

IMAT stands for International Medical Admission Test, which is a type of aptitude test. It is a hundred-minute subject-specific entrance exam in English. It is used for admission to public Italian universities offering medical, surgery, and dentistry courses, primarily for international students.

IMAT Exam and Its Deadline

IMAT is an official entrance exam for admission to Medicine and Surgery programs in public universities across Italy. The Italian Ministry of Education conducts an IMAT exam every year. In 2026, IMAT may be conducted in the month of September. Registration may likely be open in the month of July.

Eligibility for Applying for IMAT

Both EU and Non-EU students can take this exam for pursuing MBBS in Italy. Here are some eligibility requirements that you must fulfill in order to appear in IMAT.

  • Educational Qualification: It is necessary for students to complete 10+2 or equivalent, in which Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English should be mandatory subjects.
  • Minimum Marks: There should be at least 50% marks in PCB subjects. Although the required percentage may vary depending upon the university.
  • Age Limit: Only students with minimum 17 years of age can apply.
  • Language Proficiency: IMAT exams are for English-taught programs, so English proficiency is must.

Syllabus and Pattern of IMAT Exam

IMAT is divided into 5 sections, and the syllabus is meant for assessing the analytical thinking of a candidate. Here is the breakdown of the syllabus and pattern.

  1. In the General Knowledge Section, you get 12 questions, and the topics covered are politics, history, society, culture, and current affairs.
  2. In the Logical Reasoning section, there are 10 questions, and the topics covered are critical thinking, pattern, and problem solving.
  3. The Biology section comprises 18 questions with topics including genetics, cells, systems, and microbiology.
  4. The Chemistry section has 12 questions with subjects including organic and inorganic chemistry, the periodic table, and equations.
  5. In the Physics and Mathematics section, you find 8 questions with subjects including Newtonian mechanics, algebra, and probability.

You get a total of 60 questions, and 100 minutes of time is allotted. The scoring includes +1.5 for a correct answer, -0.4 for an incorrect answer, and 0 for no answer.
