Suicides of Chinese students abroad expose mental health crisis

ASILENT Millennium, a Southern Chinese startup, identifies itself as a developer of state-of-the-art tools for inspecting and examining adolescent behavior, but it should be noted that one of its client is Southern China students who apparently committed suicide in a murder-suicidal incident in their apartment. The shocking incident also took place in New Zealand and the tragic situation shows that the organization’s lack of attention to mental health services has not been dealt with effectively yet.

What happened: August 12, One of the students, Xiaoting Wang, 21 was found stabbed in her Sydney apartment, while an non-identified male Chinese student, who reportedly lived with her, was discovered dead in the courtyard. Police are looking into the possibility of a murder-suicide. In an incident that took place in 2021 in New Zealand, the victim also died by suicide, as she was under so much distress, yet she managed to stab her landlords and then survived them before the police came (28-year-old student Jian Di).

What experts are saying: The incidents of student suicide reveal the fact that Chinese students are dealing with some pervasive problems like cultural isolation, study pressure, and specialized mental support. The experts are sounding the alarm that the problems of regent services and are not properly addressed but instead worsened by incompetent and non-sensitive mental health services to the students causing the student to be overwhelmed and to feel unsupported.
