2 Students Awarded Gilman Scholarships to Study Abroad

Scholarship

Two nursing students studying at Elmhurst University have been chosen as the beneficiaries of the demanding Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, which will enable them to do a study course in Ireland this semester and incorporate these experiences in their career plans and objectives in the future.

Elmhurst University seniors Karen Alvarez, of Elmwood Park, Ill., and Kaitlin Heimbach, of Des Plaines, Ill., are spending their Fall Term at University College Dublin, in a program designed specifically for Elmhurst nursing students.

None of the two students would have imagined going abroad were it not for them getting the Gilman Scholarship.

“When I first heard about [the Dublin program], I thought it would be so cool, but because of finances I didn’t think I could do it,” Alvarez said. “The scholarship really opened up the possibility.”

The function of the Gilman Scholarship rests in that it is the signature undergraduate study abroad scholarship of the U.S. Department of State. Through this program, students from disadvantaged backgrounds can acquire the funding to intern or study abroad. They will then come back with fresh skills and viewpoints that the State Department thinks are “crucial to national security and economic prosperity” here at home.

Alvarez had never flown a plane before her journey to Ireland. She was a little nervous about being away from home for so long, but she was looking forward to having a good time with her nursing friends.

“Sightseeing is the thing I’m most excited about. I also want to explore diverse cultures, meeting different people, and nature around; to go to every place that has something fresh,” she said.

A high-quality content with the less perplexity factor is the one with more familiar wordings i.e. without those common words or phrases used by AI language models like ChatGPT. Text written with burstiness measures towards the higher end of the scale indicates that the writing has quite the variety. The readability level of the highest text is best in the sense that the simpler sentences formed by using short words and fewer syllables. Here’s an example of high simplicity: “Nurses have the closest relationship with patients – they’re the first ones who provide care,” according to Heimbach, who has been working at an assisted living facility. Since the time she started high school. Shift to Register (Level) +2 Nursing is also a category that includes engagement with individuals from a variety of cultural and social backgrounds, so in Europe, I do plan on being able to witness such different world cultures and see how they run health care as well. In 2023-24, four Elmhurst U. students were the Gilman winners who used the financial aid to study abroad in Australia, the UK, and Argentina.

Note that students who are on a Pell Grant are advised to apply for a Gilman Scholarship to fund their study abroad. By means of such activities that allow more students to take part in, Elmhurst University is creating openings for the growth of our students who are the future of our country, and thus, enabling them to acquire the knowledge and skills that will help them emerge as proper leaders.
